John Swanson,
editor/associate publisher of Window & Door | It’s hard to find toys that don’t bear the words “Made in China” somewhere on the product or packaging. On the heels of a recall by Mattel and some other companies of millions of toys coming from China tainted with lead-based paints, the Chinese government is stepping up efforts to provide greater assurance of quality and safety to the world’s consumers.
Will parents stop buying such products? I doubt it, but a few will hesitate before picking up the next Barbie doll in the store. Past concerns I’ve heard expressed about possible lead content in vinyl profiles coming from China made me wonder if the recent recalls might change attitudes within our industry.
So that’s the subject of our poll question of the week. And email me to tell me more. If you currently outsource from China, are you confident in your suppliers? Are you looking to tighten procedures to make sure imported goods meet your standards? If you don’t outsource already, have you thought about it? Are you likely to wait longer to take the plunge? I look forward to hearing from you.
RESULTS AND COMMENTS FROM LAST WEEK'S POLL—"When it comes to representing its interests, the window and door industry...": could probably do a better job. Many respondents see a need for stepped up advocacy efforts, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a lot of enthusiasm. Click here to see our poll results and further commentary.
