A few weeks ago, I sat with a group of building professionals who shared their answers to three important questions. At first glance, you might think these questions are relatively easy to answer. But you will likely find otherwise as soon as you start in on them.

  1. What is the most important thing to get done in your business that will position it for long-term success?
  2. What is the most important thing you personally must do this/next year to add significant long-term value to your business?
  3. What is the most important thing to get done in your life beyond business this/next year that will lead to long-term fulfillment and authentic happiness?

As you'd expect, the third question resonated in common refrain. As each took his turn, they spoke as one for all hard-working, self-made entrepreneurs of a certain―shall we say middle―age. Recalibrating the work-life to life-work balance is the goal, but it could well be more difficult to articulate, let alone achieve, than the mission critical business goals encapsulated in questions 1 and 2. And that's if you were able to pick just one "most important thing" to focus on next.
