J.D. Power Ranks Window Manufacturers

Marvin Windows & Doors scored number one with architects, while builders and contractors named Simonton Windows the top company in two new customer satisfaction studies covering residential window and door manufacturers. Milgard Windows & Doors ranked highest in a third new study covering subcontractors in the commercial window market. All three studies were conducted by JD Power & Associates and McGraw-Hill Construction Reports.

The three inaugural studies were designed to provide comprehensive information to assist window and patio door manufacturers in their efforts to improve customer satisfaction. Manufacturers scored companies in several satisfaction categories to establish the rankings.

In the survey of architects, overall satisfaction with residential window suppliers was based on performance in six factors. They were (in order of importance): features and design (28%), performance (19%), sales and marketing support (19%), architectural design support (17%), warranty (9%), and price (9%).

Marvin received the highest ratings in all but the bottom two factors. Pella followed Marvin in the overall scoring.

In the second residential market study, builders and remodelers considered seven factors of performance. They were (in order of importance): product (25%), warranty and repair service (25%), delivery (14%), price (11%), sales and marketing support (10%), placing orders (9%), and credit/billing (7%).

Simonton received the highest ratings in warranty and repair service, delivery, price, and placing orders. Certainteed and Marvin tied for second in the overall scoring, with Andersen, Milgard and Pella rounding out the top six spots.

In the commercial window market study, subcontractors also considered seven performance factors. They were (in order of importance): warranty and repair service (20%), product (18%), delivery (17%), sales and marketing support (15%), placing orders (11%), credit/billing (10%), and price (9%). Milgard received the highest ratings in all factors except sales and marketing support. Marvin, Pella and Andersen ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.
