NFRC to Consider Insulating Glass Certification at Fall Meeting

Members of the Silver Spring, MD-based National Fenestration Rating Council will discuss adding a new insulating glass certification requirement during a forum at the organization’s November membership meeting, according to an NFRC release.

The proposal under consideration requires participants in NFRC’s product certification program to also participate in a program for certifying seal durability of insulating glass units, according to the release.

“Many of our members and stakeholders have expressed concern about long-term performance issues, and we want to discuss IGU seal durability certification as a possible solution,” said Jim Benney, NFRC’s executive director, in the release. “We want to stress that this is a proposal only, and we look forward to receiving feedback from interested parties at our next meeting.”

The goal of the proposal would be to improve long-term energy performance of fenestration products by requiring certified IG’s, Benney added.

If the membership approves the IG certification, the proposal will move to the Ratings Committee and to the Board of Directors, Benney said.

The next membership meeting will take place November 6-9, 2006, at the Doubletree Hotel Crystal City in Washington, D.C. The forum is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8.
